Most of us have experienced times when we have woken up only to find that we have been bitten sometime in the night by a bug of some sort. It often leaves us wondering if what we are dealing with really is a bug? If it is a bug bite, then what bug could possibly be the cause? Hopefully, you aren’t dealing with a bed bug infestation, but if you are, how can you be sure of it? Pre-Empt Pest Control is here to talk about bed bug bites, what they look like and how to avoid them.
Identifying Bed Bug Bites
By and large, when you are dealing with bed bug bites, they aren’t a painful thing. In fact, many people don’t even realize they are there for several days if at all. These small bites will be red, raised bumps that look somewhat similar to a mosquito bite or a flea bite. They are usually in small, patterned clusters that can look like a zigzag pattern at times. While mosquito and flea bites are usually around body parts like the ankles, bed bugs aren’t as picky. They will bite on any part of the body that is exposed and easily accessible.
Bed Bug Bite Symptoms
Most people that experience bed bug bites have reported that they are irritating and itchy. It can be difficult to avoid itching them, but it is important that you resist the urge to avoid scarring and even infection issues. The itching can be so severe that some people have reported that they experience insomnia and trouble sleeping because of the irritation of it all.
Treating Bed Bug Bites
If you are like many people, you can deal with your bed bug bites using over the counter medications and creams. Most doctors recommend using a crème that has hydrocortisone in it to help reduce the amount of itching and irritation. You can also use antihistamines to combat the irritation caused by bed bug bites. If you experience severe allergic reaction to bed bugs, you are better off talking to your doctor about it. When you find a way to avoid itching your bed bug bites, they are more likely to go away faster and won’t likely cause scarring or infection.
Bed Bug Prevention
The best way to avoid these awful bugs is to thoroughly inspect anything that you bring home second hand or any luggage you have taken on vacation. Ensure that all of your items are bed bug free by washing the articles in the hottest water possible and closely inspecting items with a flashlight before bringing them in your home.
